\F0\CMinutes of the computing system requirements committee meeting
\C14 December 1973
\F1
1. Present: Feigenbaum, Feldman, McCarthy, Sue (Gorin visiting)
Absent: Cerf, (Floyd, ex-officio)
2. The Chairman reported as follows:
\J 1.1. The Subcommittee on Research and Instruction of the University
Computer Facilities committee has voted that getting interactive facilities
should have high priority in Stanford's computer plans. The resolution
referred to a proposal by a subsubcommittee that Stanford acquire a PDP-10
system for campus interactive computing. This proposal is currently being
compared with other alternatives by another subsubcommittee.
1.2. Humanities and Sciences is currently considering funding the
CSD display system, and it is now going through the budget cycle with action
expected in January. It looks good for favorable action, and if we get it,
we still hope to have the system operating in September 1974.
Once we get the money, there will be a technical review to determine if we
are still going in the right direction.
1.3. The experience of using the IMSS computer for the CS206 was
highly favorable for the instructor, the students, and for IMSS.\.
3. The following actions were taken:
\J 3.1. The committee recommends that the department try to get blanket
permission to convert Provost's funds for use on the IMSS computer.
3.2. The committee recommends that Provost's funds in general be
spendable on any computer facilities and not just on SCIP facilities.
3.3. The committee recommends that SCIP be requested to unbundle
user services from the computer rates.
3.4. The committee supports the recommendation that interactive
computing of high quality at a cost low enough for use in courses be Stanford's
main computing goal.
3.5. The committee further favors the proposal that Stanford acquire
a PDP-10.
3.6. Until Stanford as a whole solves the interactive computing problem,
the committee recommends that the department try to negotiate an arrangement
to make major use of the IMSS computer.\.
